Orange Friday: Think orange, wear orange. That's the idea behind Orange Friday, a new Giants event every Friday night at home games. It kicked off at the Giants-Rockies game, with orange pom-poms, caps and sweatshirts dotting the stands.

Orange was the color of one Giants uniform top in the '70s, but since then it's been more of a stripe as black became the dominant color.

Fans can now be part of Orange Nation, with giveaways scheduled for subsequent Friday contests. The first 40,000 fans Friday received orange-colored pom-poms, while caps and rappers will also be featured during the summer.

An online contest on sfgiants.com, "Are You the Orangest SF Giants Fan?" will run May 6 to Sept. 1, with nine winners to be recognized during Fan Appreciation weekend on Sept. 30.

In 2003, when the Giants made the playoffs, "Orange October" proved a great success.

"It's always been a big part of our colors, obviously, orange and black, so this year we thought it'd be a great way to bring our fans together," said Bryan Srabian, the Giants' director of marketing and entertainment and the newly designated "chief officer of orange."

Fans spotted by members of the Giants organization wearing orange at the park or around town will also be recognized and presented a special "Your SF Giants" orange button. The concession stands will also feature orange beer cups and a new orange Giants 2005 schedule cup.

Baseball Owners and Players Set to Ignore Subpoenas

TORONTO (Reuters) - Major League Baseball players and owners stood united on Thursday in their opposition to subpoenas to appear before a Congressional committee investigating the use of steroids in the sport.

If MLB chooses to ignore the subpoenas, which now appears almost certain, it would delay the hearing and lead to months of legal wrangling that could end up in a U.S. District Court and be another unwanted distraction to the start of new season.

Some of baseball's biggest names, including home run kings Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Jason Giambi, as well as Jose Canseco, the author of a best-selling expose about the abuse of steroids, have been subpoenaed to testify at a House Government Reform Committee (news - web sites) hearing on March 17.

Subpoenas were also issued to Curt Schilling, Rafael Palmeiro and Frank Thomas along with players' union chief Donald Fehr and MLB vice-presidents Rob Manfred and Sandy Alderson.

MLB said Fehr and Manfred would testify voluntarily "despite serious legal concerns" but that players "will respectfully decline the invitations to testify."

UNITY SHOW

In a rare show of unity over the steroids scandal that has battered the sport over the last year, the players and owners said they would fight the subpoenas, which are far more than simple "invitations" to attend.

MLB has sent a letter to the committee, saying the committee had overstepped its legal bounds.

Angry baseball officials, labeling the committee as "aggressive," accused the government of meddling and ignoring recent progress that has been made to try to clean up the sport.

Vice-president Manfred said in a conference call: "Despite the progress we have made on that issue and efforts to educate members of Congress about that progress, we have been confronted with an effort by a House Committee to hold hearings on this topic.

"In light of the aggressive stance this committee has taken with respect to MLB we have decided to retain outside counsel Stanley Brand."

According to Brand, the hearing involves serious legal and constitutional issues.

RIGHT TO PRIVACY

MLB will also fight the committee's efforts to subpoena the results of its drug testing, arguing that it violates a player's right to privacy.

Brand said there are also concern that the hearing could interfere with the ongoing BALCO case in California.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported in December that Giambi told a grand jury investigating the BALCO case that he had used steroids.

Brand said: "The legal audacity of subpoenaing someone who has given grand jury testimony before there's been a trial is an absolute, excessive and unprecedented misuse of Congressional power."

In the BALCO saga, Victor Conte, the head of the San Francisco-area BALCO labs, is accused of distributing steroids in a scandal that has damaged the reputations of top athletes in baseball, American football and track and field. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=577&e=1&u=/nm/20050310/sp_nm/mlb_subpoenas_dc

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Backup infielder Deivi Cruz singled, doubled and played outstanding defense while left-hander Noah Lowry pitched three shutout innings in the Giants' 5-1 win over the Texas Rangers at Scottsdale Stadium on Tuesday.

Lowry, rocked for three runs in his first outing March 4, had his changeup working again and gave up only a single to leadoff batter Michael Young.

The winning pitcher was Jesse Foppert, who held the Rangers scoreless over the fourth and fifth innings. http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20050308&content_id=961696&vkey=spt2005gamer&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

Giants' Nen says he will not make another comeback-

Damn I hope not, I would hate for Nen to be released just to see him go to another team. Nen is done stick a fork in him.

Nen said Saturday that he is retiring from baseball, ending his comeback attempt from three failed shoulder operations, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Earlier this year, after almost a year of rehabilitation work, Nen again reached 90 mph with his fastball. A free agent, he had preliminary discussions with the Cubs, Diamondbacks and Rockies. But after suffering persistent pain in workouts for the past month, he called Giants General Manager Brian Sabean on Saturday to inform him of his retirement plans. Nen, 35, amassed 314 career saves, 13th on the all-time list, and made three All-Star teams.

Bonds undergoes knee surgery

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds, who has

lamented his "80-year-old knees," underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Monday to address minor arthritis and repair a small meniscus tear.

The 40-year-old outfielder underwent a similar operation on his

left knee on Oct. 12, but the club

reported that he should be at full strength

for the start of the 2005 season.

Monday's 25-minute procedure was performed

by Dr. Art Ting at the Fremont Surgery Center.

"This was a minor cleanup procedure and, in fact, the arthritis under Barry's kneecap was not as bad as we expected," said Stan Conte, the Giants' head athletic trainer. "He will start his rehabilitation tomorrow, and we expect him to be competitive in six weeks and be at full strength by Opening Day."

A bid of $14,975 got some lucky fan a cance to hit  10 pitches off a Giants pitcher and 4 tickets to a home contest during the season.

alouualoubonds.jpg

The Alou brothers -- Felipe, Matty and Jesus -- are legends in San Francisco Giants history.

And now the genealogical beat goes on.

According to multiple sources, veteran free agent outfielder Moises Alou, son of Giants manager Felipe Alou, will sign a two-year contract and then possibly retire after the pact expires. Before the deal becomes official, Alou reportedly needs to pass the requisite physical.

Giants fans have long wanted a good hitter to back up Barry Bonds in the lineup -- Moises Alou was a popular choice -- but it remains to be seen if the new slugger will force opposing pitchers to not intentionally walk Bonds.

Alou is a career .300 hitter with 278 lifetime homers who has driven in 100-plus runs five times. ESPN Deportes also said Alou had offers from Los Angeles, the New York Mets and Houston.

Giants employees have giving spirit

Ticket sales executive Diane McDermott shows a party guest the Giants sweatshirt Santa delivered for him

Wayne Franklin

Franklin returns to Giants.  SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants pitcher Wayne Franklin's foray into free agency didn't last long.

As in less than 24 hours.

The left-handed reliever was technically cast adrift Monday night when San Francisco declined to tender him an offer for 2005, but the 31-year-old was re-signed to a one-year deal Tuesday
( Franklin?   Hopefully he will do well for us)

Tuesday Dec 21st

Giants non-tender Mohr, two others

Pedro Felize

and Yorvit Torrealba .

All players  were tendered contracts except  Mohr

Wayne Franklin and Cody Ransom .

Mohr is now free to negotiate with any mlb team, including Giants.

If agreements cannot be reached with Feliz and Torrealba, a hearing before an independant arbitrator will determine their salaries for the 2005 season.  Giants are hoping to avoid that after losing last year with AJ.

The biggest Shock was Dustin Mohr. They better not be pulling a Depodesta here on us.

So all is not lost.

I  personally would like to keep all three of these guys.

A.J. Pierzynski led all NL catchers with 77 RBIs in '04.

And the  cancer is gone. Hey I didn't hate Aj but he really didnt mesh with our team. So good luck AJ!

But even better GO GIANTS!!

Jason Christiansen went 4-3 with 4.50 ERA for the Giants last season.

Giants sign Christianson to a one year deal. It's been a year since his  Tommy John surgery so hopefully he will be stronger. If not he is only inked to a one year deal so if he  sucks we can get rid of him, unlike having Nen on the Bench for 2 years and  well there is a groove where Nen's Ass used to be.  I will kill myself if all of a sudden Nen is healthy.

Monday Dec 13th

Alou said Sunday that  he is happy with the current roster, but we will add players.

Ya think?

Matheny.jpg

Our new catcher. (One answer at catcher is Giants receiver A.J. Pierzynski. With the Giants signing St. Louis catcher Mike Matheny, Pierzynski is going to be traded or nontendered by Monday, and the White Sox ought to take a look at him.)
